Students Residence and Visa

Students who are EU / EEA and non EU / EEA citizens entering Lithuania must have valid passports or ID cards.

EU / EEA citizens need a right to reside in Lithuania if they stay for more than 90 days. They can obtain a Temporary Residence Permit for studies in Lithuania at the Kaunas Migration Office after having arrived in Kaunas, for a period not longer than one year.

All students who are non EU / EEA citizens must obtain a residence permit from the nearest Lithuanian embassy or consulate in their home country. It is also important to check if a visa is also required to enter the Schengen area.

For further information please visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania (www.urm.lt) and the website of the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania (www.migracija.lt).

Accommodation

Vytautas Magnus University has two students’ dormitories. The newly renovated dormitory is in the very centre of the city; the second university dormitory is further from the centre. During the academic year foreign students are accommodated in VMU student dormitory (Vytauto pr. 71, Kaunas), in the city centre.

Students in the dormitory of VMU are accommodated in shared rooms for 2 or 3 persons. Each room has a table, a bed, a wardrobe and chairs. Beddings and towels will be provided. There is a fridge in each room. Usually two rooms are in one block. Internet access is available in each room.

In order to get accommodation in the Vytautas Magnus University dormitory you have to apply for an accommodation with a special Accommodation form. Accommodation form should be send to International Office of VMU by the deadline.

Accommodation forms received later than the deadline may not be processed. This means that you cannot expect to be accommodated in the university dormitory, and you will have to find accommodation on your own. You will, however, be added to a waiting list, but we cannot guarantee you any accommodation due to the lack of rooms available at the moment. In case we have more applicants than rooms available, priority will be given to students whose “Accommodation form” was received first.

The International Office will however make an effort to inform you about your accommodation by sending you an e-mail before your arrival in Kaunas.
